First Day
First Day brings families, students, teachers and administrators together on the first day of school to celebrate education and begin to form home-school partnerships that will positively effect student academic achievement. Schools welcome students and families to school and present First Day activities. These activities can be as simple as offering refreshments, visiting their children’s classrooms, and/or holding an assembly. Or, First Day activities can be as ambitious as a full day of workshops, picnics and parades.
If we celebrate the last day of school, and we say we support education, doesn’t it make sense to celebrate the first day of school? A real “Welcome” can be created with friendly greeters at the door, a welcome table, a festive atmosphere using balloons, welcome banners, posters, crepe paper, flowers, music, etc.
Benefits: » Parents, students and teachers begin the year together on a positive note, before there are any issues with any child, and establish a positive connection. » Attracts ALL parents, even those who do not usually participate. » The more welcoming the school, the more people attend. » Invites the community to get involved too.
